A guest post by Susan Bodack

As a frequent vacation-goer and swimwear industry insider, I definitely do my fair share of traveling. I’ve been to a number of different beach towns around the world but Cancun, Mexico is definitely one of my favorites. Over the years, Cancun has formed a somewhat questionable reputation in terms of safety, but if you’re smart and travel wisely, you’ll have nothing to worry about except sun, sand, swimwear and what drink to order next!

Cancun, Mexico

Since my trip to Cancun was a short 4-day getaway, the beach was my number one priority. Our resort was right on the beach so my swimwear was definitely put to good use! Cancun gives new meaning to the term “white sandy beaches” and the turquoise-colored water was perfectly crystal clear. The water was warmed by sun’s rays and because the sun is so strong, even those who “rarely get sunburned” (like myself) will definitely feel its power. Don’t forget to apply and reapply the sunscreen, even under your swimwear! The water was so calm that you could even bring your drink in with you. Swimwear is typical daytime attire in Cancun so make sure to bring plenty of fashionable swimwear, cover-ups and sandals! Let me just warn you—Cancun’s beach is what turned me into a beach snob so be prepared to experience a beach that others often can’t live up to!

Cancun, Mexico: White sand & turquoise waters

When night falls, it’s time to put away the swimwear and get ready to have the time of your life! Cancun really comes alive at night. The clubs are so much fun and definitely nothing like I’ve seen in the states! If you like to dance like I do, then you’ll feel right at home. Check with your resort to see if they have any excursion packages; our resort let us sign up for a “booze cruise,” which turned out to be one of our favorite nights in Cancun!

In terms of the people and safety, I felt right at home in Cancun, as everyone we met was friendly and accommodating. I felt completely safe walking around during the day and night because there are literally people everywhere. My biggest regret was going for just 4 days, as I did not get a chance to do much sightseeing. But after the amazing trip, I vowed to go back so I can really explore Cancun!

Mexico’s new secretary of tourism, Gloria Guevara, addressed worries about safety and security

An excellent article from Travel Weekly. Gloria Guevara, Mexico’s new secretary of tourism, held a webinar/interview on Nov 18 at Travel Weekly.

Echoing what we have been saying for well over a year and a half, Ms.Guevara confirmed that Mexico is a safe place to travel, as well as answering those who wonder “is it safe to travel to Cancun?” Yes, it is safe to travel to Cancun. Drug-related violence is a reality, but it is confined to some border towns and cities.

Is it safe to travel to Cancun now? Yes it is!

From the article:

Applying generous doses of fact to combat whatever fictions, fears and misperceptions travelers and the trade might entertain about her country, Mexico’s new secretary of tourism, Gloria Guevara, addressed worries about safety and security south of the border in an exclusive Nov. 18 webinar appearance at TravelWeekly.com.

In the hourlong webinar, titled “Mexico: Perception vs. Reality,” Guevara assured her host, Travel Weekly Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann, and thousands of registered webinar participants that Mexico is a safe tourist destination.

Despite a steady stream of negative coverage in the U.S. news media regarding drug-related gang violence along the border and around Acapulco, she said, Mexico remains a popular, safe and, most importantly, value-rich vacation destination.

“All countries or societies have problems to solve,” Guevara said, “but Mexico is one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world.”

Moreover, she said, Mexico is a leading luxury vacation destination. “According to a recent survey conducted by Virtuoso, Mexico came up as the No. 2 country … preferred by their members,” Guevara noted. “It is also No. 1 in terms of spas in the world, and three out of 10 Americans report return visits within just 12 months.”

Guevara admitted, “There are a few places in Mexico to avoid,” but she noted, “It’s easy to do.” She specifically cited two towns along the Texas border, Matamoros and Ciudad Juarez; the latter alone accounts for 30% of all drug-related conflict in Mexico.

“But for the rest of the country, you can relax and enjoy yourself,” she said. “Our major destinations continue to be world-class, and they can be visited anytime.”

Mexico’s major tourism destinations are, for the most part, located hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles from crime hot spots. Cancun, for instance, is almost 1,000 miles south of Ciudad Juarez, about the distance between New York and Birmingham, Ala. And Copper Canyon, popular for its desert railway trips, lies 206 miles from the border, the distance from New York to Baltimore.

“Let me ask you: If you were planning a trip to New York, would you cancel it if you heard about challenges in Baltimore?” Guevara asked. “Of course not. Copper Canyon is very safe and very nice.”

Webinar attendees flooded TravelWeekly.com with more than 200 questions for Guevara during the session, at one point temporarily freezing the server. Guevara did her best to answer as many as possible within the time allotted.

Come enjoy paradise! - Cancun is safe to visit

• On responding to negative media: “For the last couple of years, we as the government made the mistake of leaving a gap of information. When you leave a gap, what happens is that it’s filled with bad information. What we’re doing right now is working with a [public relations] agency to put [these] things in context.”

• On the deadly Nov. 14 blast at the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel in Playa del Carmen: “We haven’t received the final report … so we don’t want to draw any conclusion, [but] we’re sure it’s something that’s not going to happen in any other hotels. This was very sad, and of course we’re very concerned and sad for the travelers affected.”

• Hotel certification: “We will be standardizing our [hotel] ratings. We will be certifying every single hotel from whatever stars they have to the maximum number of stars, so that you’ll have a seal that will mean the service from that hotel is guaranteed. We’re deciding right now on what standard we should use.”

Hola from Cancun!

As a result of the recent travel warnings issued by the US State Department, once again many of you are worried about your safety when traveling to Mexico. This is understandable, and I’d like to help you be relaxed about your upcoming Mexico vacation by showing you how a Sunday at the beautiful beaches of Cancun is like!

The beautiful beach of Cancun!

It is true, we are not perfect (as no country is) and there do is crime and violence in Mexico, but you have to keep in mind that the drug related violence is currently happening in border towns such as Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez, where the violence is at the worst; not in places such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and any other beach resort in Mexico.

The Mexican government takes good care of its top tourist destinations obviously, as it is in their best interests to keep the tourism flow coming. Taking a few general safety tips can help you be more relaxed and have a fun & safe holiday!

I hope you enjoy the trip report!

It had been a while since I had visited my beloved beach, so I decided this was a perfect day for doing it!

Now that the Cancun Beach Recovery Project is finished, this is also a great opportunity to show you how the beaches of Cancun are looking right now: Long strips of pure, powder-like white sand next to the turqouise blue warm waters of the Caribbean sea! Paradise!

Beautiful brand new beaches!

This time I went to my favorite beach to start a beach walk in Cancun: Gaviota Azul Beach! You can find the public access to the beach located just beside Plaza Forum Mall and Cocobongo Nightclub.

Big blue "Playa Gaviota Azul" sign marking the entrance =)

I arrived around mid-day, so there were many people already at the beach! There was some kind of spring break event going on hosted by Corona Beer. They had a sound system, a dj, MC, dancing girls on stage, and they were giving away prizes such as a free bottle of wine for dinner, t-shirts, etc to the crowd.

The Corona event beach hut!

The Corona girls at stage!

The day was perfect, sunny and blue skies! The beaches are really looking great, take a look!

Beautiful beach of Cancun!

Though wave activity in Cancun is no match to other places in Mexico or the world, there do is a surfer-bodyboarder state association here, and you can find surfers/bodyboarders at any day on the beach, like these guys!

I had a chance to talk to Cleofas, a friend who works as a lifeguard for a hotel, and he informs me that all public beaches in Cancun have lifeguards on duty daily from 9am to 6pm. You can easily spot them by their red trunks and/or tshirts with the red cross logo!

Lifeguard post on the beach in Cancun!

And last but not least, heres a short video of this beautiful day at the beautiful beach of Cancun! Enjoy!

Dia de los Tres Reyes – Three Kings Day – Epiphany in Cancun!

The "Tres Reyes Magos" (Three Magi Kings)

The twelve days of Christmas begin on Christmas Day, December 25th and end on the Twelfth Night, January 5th . In Mexico, on January 6th, traditionally the last day of the Christmas season, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes, in spanish). Traditionally, families get together for a cup of hot chocolate and a piece of sweet “Rosca de Reyes”, or Three Kings Bread.

Mmm... delicious Rosca de Reyes!

In Mexico, Spain and other Latin countries it is when children receive the majority of their gifts from the Three Kings, or “Reyes Magos” rather than from Santa Claus at Christmas. Before going to bed the children place their old shoes or a box filled with grass or hay under their bed for the camels with a wish list on top for the Three Kings. In the morning the shoes or box is filled with toys & gifts from the Three Kings.

According to legend based on scripture (Matthew 2:1-12) this day commemorates the Three Wise Men, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar, who followed the star to Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They travel to Bethlehem, and along the way encountered King Herod, whom they tell of the birth of the new King. Herod orders them to find the baby and return to tell him where the Messiah could be found so that he may pay homage. After being warned by God in a dream that they should not return to Herod because he planned on killing the baby, they returned to their own countries another way.

The scripture does mention the three gifts but does not say how many came to visit. It was always assumed that if there were three gifts, then there were probably three people. Scholars estimate the number to be 2-12, possibly more. Are you wondering why they make such a big deal out of when the Kings came and not when the shepherds or others visited? It’s because the “Kings” (Wise Men or Magi) who brought gifts to the infant Jesus were the first Gentiles (non-Jews) to acknowledge Jesus as “King” and in doing so, the first to reveal that Jesus came for all people, from all nations and races.

The Rosca de Reyes is a ring-shaped bread with very small plastic dolls baked inside, which represent the baby Jesus. The figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant from King Herod’s troops. According to tradition whoever finds the figure in their slice of sweet bread must give a party on February 2nd, Candlemas Day or Dia de la Candelaria, offering tamales and atole (a hot, sweet drink thickened with corn flour) or Mexican hot chocolate to their guests. Candlemas is the day that Mary presented the infant Jesus to the temple and is traditionally the day that candles are blessed in the Catholic Church.

The little plastic dolls stuffed into the bread!

It is best to pre-order a Rosca de Reyes at a Mexican bakery or panaderia. When ordering at other bakeries ask for a King’s Cake, Louisiana-style which is basically the same thing. Or, if you like to cook, you can also take a look at this recipe for a Rosca de Reyes!

Feliz Año Nuevo 2010 desde Cancun!

Estimados amig@s:

Cancun Beach Sunday: Gaviota Azul Beach!

Hi friends! Its your pal Camilo again, bringing you another great Cancun Beach Sunday!

This time, I had the pleasure of having my good buddy Jorge come visit me straight from Cuernavaca!

Jorge is the founder, producer, and CEO of Chai Tassajara , his recent tea startup; specializing in making fresh, organic, 100% natural and sugar free, not to mention DELICIOUS Chai! I’m a fan of his chai!

You can follow Chai Tassajara at Twitter and Facebook

Jorge hadn’t been to cancun in years! Around 10, to be precise. So, you can imagine his surprise when he saw the city has changed quite a bit!

I decided to take him to the beach straight away, what else is one to do with a Cancun visitor? lol

I took Jorge to my personal favorite Beach in Cancun: Gaviota Azul Beach!

Gaviota Azul (Blue Seagull) Beach, Cancun!

Located right behind Coco Bongo / Plaza Forum Shopping Mall, Gaviota Azul Beach has been my favorite Cancun Beach for quite some time. Why? Because I personally like some wave activity, to play around in the waves, either with or without a board Gaviota Azul Beach has some medium wave activity, sometimes when the weather is bad, waves can get bigger, and you can see the local surfers enjoying them.

Gaviota Azul Beach is also a family beach, where lots of locals go, though only a couple of them dive into the sea when there is wave activity…

Locals enjoying Gaviota Azul Beach!

Cancun Is Safe Tip: BEWARE OF THE UNDERTOW! The sea of Cancun, although BEAUTIFUL, can also be DANGEROUS, if you dont take PROPER CAUTION. ALWAYS pay attention to the flags at the beach! If you see red flags, better to stay away from the sea that day! The Undertow current CAN GET REALLY STRONG, and FATAL ACCIDENTS CAN/WILL HAPPEN. Even if there are lifeguards always on duty (except at night), even if you know how to swim, always respect the sea!

Getting to Gaviota Azul Beach is really easy: Just take any bus going to the Cancun Hotel Zone, and ask the driver to let you know when you are at the “Party Center”, or “Plaza Forum”. Once you get off the bus, just ask anybody for directions to Plaza Forum or Cocobongo, those are 2 really well known spots in Cancun, and literally anybody can easily give you directions. The entrance to Gaviota Azul Beach is right between Coco Bongo and The City Beach Club. Can’t miss it!

Gaviota Azul Beach is highlighted in red in this Cancun Beach Map!

Both Jorge and I were surprised when we arrived! I hadn’t visited the beach for a couple of weeks, and it was amazing and really great to see the Cancun Beach Recovery Project coming along! I don’t remember having beaches this BIG! I guess I saw them in the “old” Cancun, around 20 years earlier, or more! It’s been a while, and its really nice to see we have big & beautiful beaches back again!

The new, big & beautiful beaches of Cancun!

We walked for a while, looking for a place to sit down and relax, and we finally chose one.

Jorge making himself comfortable at Gaviota Azul Beach,Cancun

Weather was strange! At moments, gray clouds would cover the sun, and then, the sun would shine for a while, and then it would get covered by clouds again. lol! This continued all day.

Cancun Is Safe Tip: CAUTION! Even if clouds obstruct the sun, YOU ARE GETTING UV RAYS. Do not think that because the sun is not “burning” you, you are not getting sunburnt! You have to ALWAYS use sunblock! Cloudy or not, the sun rays will harm your skin if you don’t protect it!

Unlike Playa Tortugas, there arent that many street vendors at Gaviota Azul Beach. The ocassional one, but thats it. Like this one pictured here, a street vendor of cotton candy! I loved the colors!

Street vendor selling Cotton Candy

Jorge chose to take a nap at the beach, while I went for my usual swim! I love to get into the sea, swim and play around with the waves! I used to do Windsurfing back in the day, now I only use my body as a board! lol

After a while, we decided to call it quits. Jorge still wanted to see other parts of the city, since its changed so much since the last time he visited, and I gladly went into my “tourist guide mode” for a friend, once again

Just another Cancun Beach Sunday! Stay tuned for the next!

Merry Cancun Xmas! A personal Xmas thought for the holidays!

Merry Xmas from Cancun!

Dear Friends:

I’d like to share with you a personal Xmas thought.

This was a tough year for us all. Tougher to some than to others, but we all suffered. Let’s not look back, but ahead; let’s look in all that our hard work got us, even if it was just staying at the same place. Think about this: Many, many people lost EVERYTHING they had. If you didn’t, or lost little, you should really appreciate that.

The future is built in the present, with our present actions. The past just serves as a memory and idea repository, a place where we go to learn, and apply those lessons to our present moment.

The worst is behind us, so they say, but even if it wasn’t so, even if the worst is still to come, it doesn’t matter. What matters is for all of us to keep BELIEVING we can do it, keep believing things will get better; if we truly believe, with all our heart, then we will start making the change we all want. They say the hardest thing in the world is a diamond, I disagree; to me, the hardest thing in the universe is the human spirit, the soul. We never lose it, even if we think we do. It’s just always there.

So let’s keep believing, lets keep our hopes & spirits alive, lets keep working for a better world for us, our loved ones, and everybody.

I say: the best is yet to come. And it will. It always does. Has to. Just believe.

Sending warm wishes to you all, may you have, if only for tonight, a moment filled with love & harmony with your loved ones.

Merry Xmas from Cancun!
